This course forms level 1 of The London Ear Specialists’ training programme for health care professionals in aural care. The focus is on safe and effective endoscopic removal of ear wax in a primary care setting. The module can be taken as a stand-alone module but can also be used as a base for further training in the future.

 

Course aim

The aim of the module is to enable attendees to be competent in the endoscopic removal of troublesome ear wax. Basic science, anatomy and physiology of the ear, ear wax and important pathologies will be explored. There will be a focus on the practical aspects of endoscopic wax removal. The course aims to give attendees the knowledge, practical skill, as well as the medical equipment (“The London Ear Specialists Endoscopic Wax Removal Starter Pack”) required for confident and competent endoscopic wax removal in a community setting.

 

Summary

  • We are a specialist Ear Endoscope micro suction training course that provides the opportunity to learn directly from an expert Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon with over 10 years experience. 

 

  • An opportunity to learn a skill traditionally exclusive to Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Specialists in a safe and highly supportive environment. 

 

  • Our training is tailored specifically for pharmacists working within a community pharmacy setting. 

 

  • Mastering a new skill requires practice. We provide plenty of opportunities for repeated practical application of your new skill within the course and afterwards. 

 

  • The London Ear Specialists have arranged a post course drop in centre available for the first 3 months after your course. This will be an opportunity to practice new skills or refresh learned skills with feedback and supervision by our experienced training team. 

 

  • The programme is accredited by ENT UK, the professional membership body representing Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeons in the United Kingdom.

Learning outcomes 

 

By the end of the course you will be able to demonstrate:

Communication:

- Ability to take a focused history

- Ability to give clear and appropriate instruction and information regarding endoscopic wax removal

- Ability to take informed consent for endoscopic wax removal

Safety and hygiene: 

- Observe appropriate personal infection control 

- Ability to clean equipment appropriately 

- Correct handling and disposal of waste and single-use instruments

Basic Science: 

- Knowledge of relevant anatomy and physiology of the outer, middle and inner ear 

 

Medico-legal: 

- Knowledge of consent process, who can and who cannot legally consent 

- Knowledge of professional indemnity insurance 

- Ability to maintain accurate records of patient consultations and procedures 

 

Equipment and its use: 

- Understanding of function of otoendoscope, Endoscope-I app and associated medical devices provided in “The London Ear Specialists Endoscopic Wax Removal Starter Pack” 

- Perform safe otoendoscopy examination of an ear canal with The London Ear Specialists (TLES) Endoscope (2.7mm diameter, 0 degree, 34mm working length) 

- Perform safe and appropriate wax removal using The London Ear Specialists Ear Endoscope and suction/instruments 

- Take “before and after” photos of patients’ ear canals using the Endoscope-I application and send them to the patient via email if requested 

- Ability to decide whether ear wax has been satisfactorily treated using The London Ear Specialists Endoscope or if other treatment is required 

- Ability to recognise pathologies using The London Ear Specialists Endoscope that are not wax and refer patient to their General Practitioner
